On September 20, Samarkand State Medical Institute was visited by world-renowned Turkish and American scientist, Nobel Prize winner in Chemistry 2015 "for his research on DNA repair mechanisms", Professor Aziz Sancar.

  Professor Aziz Sancar is the recipient of various scientific awards for his use of the circadian clock in the treatment of cancer. He also was nominated by the American Chemical Society (ACS) for the North Carolina Chemist of the Year Award in 2001. Along with this award, Dr.Sancar was elected a Fellow of the US National Academy of Sciences, one of the most prestigious scientific institutions in the scientific world at that time. He was the first American Turkish scientist to be elected to such a prestigious academy. The scientist was also elected a full member of the Turkish Academy of Sciences in 2006.

  During his visit to SamSMI, the distinguished guest was accompanied by Vice-Rector for Internationalization and Strategic Development of Silk Road International Tourism University Zhuliboy Eltazarov.

  So, the honouring process of the eminent guest was held at the institute's large assembly hall, where Rector Jasur Rizaev delivered his opening speech. The rector expressed his gratitude to Dr. Aziz Sancar for visiting our institute and wished him success and new discoveries in his greeting.

  Then, Dr Aziz Sancar gave a lecture on "Circadian clock, DNA repair, cancer chemotherapy" for staff of the institute. The lecturer spoke in detail about the process of excision repair, that is a kind of "repair" of DNA. Thus, excision repair of damaged nucleotide also occurs in the process of repairing defects caused by mutagenic substances. The presentation also emphasized the importance of the latest discoveries in biochemistry in the treatment of cancer and other diseases.

  It should be noted that the lecture aroused great interest among the participants. The Nobel Laureate was especially delighted by the comments and questions posed by the young doctoral and master's students of the institute.

  At the end of his visit, Dr Sancar expressed his gratitude for the warm welcome and noted the high scientific potential of the staff of our institute.
