Abstract

ANNOTATION The epithelium of the mucous membrane of the oral cavity, in particular the cheeks of a person, consists of stratified squamous non-keratinizing epithelium. Surface epithelial cells are updated due to the germ layer. Violation of the process of differentiation of cells of this epithelium is possible with various metabolic, hormonal changes, exposure to mechanical and physical factors, chemical and radioactive substances. We studied smears prepared from the epithelium of the cheeks of patients with COVID (buccal epithelium) and stained using the Papanicolaou method. It has been established that in patients with coronavirus infection, various changes in the structure of the nuclei of the buccal epithelium are often detected. In particular, cytogenetic disorders, which are more common in patients with moderate disease severity. Also, there is an increase in the proliferative activity of epithelial cells of the buccal mucosa. Patients with severe disease also show cytogenetic abnormalities. However, in addition, they have cytological signs of the initial and final phases of destruction of the nuclei of buccal epithelium cells.
